Reinhardt Buys completed BLC and LLB law degrees at the University of Pretoria . After completing his articles he completed an LLM Degree at the University of Cape Town on Internet law and related rights.

Before starting his own law firm, Buys Incorporated, in January 2001, Reinhardt was employed by Sonnenburg, Hoffman and Galombik in Cape Town. Buys Inc. was one of the first law firms in South Africa to specialise exclusively in IT, Internet and e-commerce law.

Reinhardt is editor of South Africa’s first interactive Internet law textbook, “Cyberlaw@SA”, which had the unique distinction of being the first textbook of its kind in South Africa to have had a virtual launch on the Internet. Reinhardt continued to edit the Top 100 Cyberlaw FAQ and the second edition of Cyberlaw@SA which was launched in January 2004. In 2005 Reinhardt was one of the top three finalists in the Best African CIO awards and in 2006 Buys Inc. was selected as a Top 300 South African Company. In this year Buys Inc. was also the first law firm to be selected to the prestigious Technology Top 100 list.

As an entertaining and knowledgeable speaker, he regularly addresses local and international conferences and seminars on Internet and e-commerce law. Reinhardt acted as guest lecturer at the University of Stellenbosch, RAU, the University of the Western Cape, Cape Technicon and his alma maters, the University of Pretoria and UCT.

Reinhardt is passionate about technology and how it affects the law – when he’s not advising clients he spends his time researching and writing his LLD thesis, titled: “Protection of source code – copyright or patent?”
